Annual Report of the Secretary-General

The Report of the Secretary-General on the Work of the Organization to the 64th session of the General Assembly has been issued (A/64/1). The report is divided into 3 main chapters:

Security Council Reform - Report of the Open-ended Working Group (A/63/47)
English, French & Spanish:
The report of the Open-ended Working Group on the Question of Equitable Representation on and Increase in the Membership of the Security Council and Other Matters related to the Security Council has been issued (A/63/47). This is a subsidiary body of the General Assembly dealing with Security Council reform. The report includes annexes containing schedule proposal and working papers on Security Council reform.

Ten Stories the World Should Hear More About 2008
The UN tries to make sure that stories that do not necessarily grab the headlines are not forgotten. The Department of Public Information (DPI) has launched a list of stories that unfolded in the last year that the world may wish to hear more about. The stories seek to highlight issues that may not have made it to many people’s radar screens:

  •  Neglected emergency: thousands displaced by violence in Central African Republic
  • Global food crisis: more go hungry amid economic turmoil
  • Road to justice: a novel approach to fighting crime and impunity
  • West Africa drug trade: new transit hub for cocaine trafficking fuels corruption
  • Kosovo: the untold story of a diplomatic breakthrough
  • Climate change: adaptation critical as global warming accelerates
  • Crime in a box: ports crack down on trafficking of arms, drugs and human beings
  • Space debris: orbiting debris threatens sustainable use of outer space
  • Struggle for survival: Colombia's indigenous people face threat of extinction
  • Human rights milestone: new protocol boosts economic, social and cultural rights
Climate Change

Summit on Climate Change (22 September 2009, UN Headquarters)
The Secretary-General is convening the Summit on 22 September 2009 in order to gather heads of state to discuss the United Nations Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen to be held this December. The Summit website includes background information, the Summit programme, and a newsroom. It also provides statements made at the Summit and links to live coverage of meetings.

Climate Community (new UNDP website)
English, French, Spanish:
This new site is a knowledge database for information on key climate change issues, and was created to assist governments and other policy makers as they navigate the complicated world of addressing climate change.

Women, Gender Equality and Climate Change
This new online feature on was launched by UN Women Watch, to coincide with the Summit on Climate Change on 22 September and to mark the Global Climate Week. It was developed by DAW/DESA, as the Women Watch Task Manager, in close collaboration with IANWGE Task Force on Gender Equality and Climate Change, an initiative co-chaired by UNDP and UNESCO.

Economic & Social Development

Anti-corruption policies and measures of the Fortune Global 500 (UNODC/PricewaterhouseCoopers)
This compendium looks at what companies in the Fortune 500 Global Index (2008) are doing to fight corruption. It highlights a range of measures, and different approaches. While there is no one-size-fits-all, businesses should not go below international standards contained in the UN Convention against Corruption.

MDG Gap Task Force Report 2009: Strengthening the Global Partnership for Development in a Time of Crisis

This report points out that although the global partnership for development has strengthened, the world is still very much behind in the efforts in achieving agreed targets, especially in the face of the economic crisis.

The World Economic and Social Survey 2009: Promoting Development, Saving the Planet (DESA)

This flagship publication from the Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA) argues that failing to address the current level of global inequality over the next half century or more, while the world goes about trying to solve the climate problem, is economically, politically and ethically unacceptable. It contends that low-emissions, high-growth pathways for development are both feasible and necessary.

Anti-Human Trafficking Manual for Criminal Justice Practitioners (UNODC)
The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) has released a new manual that addresses gaps in the capacity of criminal justice practitioners to prevent and combat trafficking in persons and elaborates promising practices at every phase of the criminal justice response to trafficking in persons and stands as a practical guide and training tool for criminal justice practitioners.

Report of the United Nations Fact Finding Mission on the Gaza Conflict
The UN Fact-Finding Mission has released its report on the Gaza conflict. The report presents strong evidence of war crimes and crimes against humanity committed during the Gaza conflict and calls to end impunity.
