United Nations and European Union co-chair third Conference to support Syria

For the third year in a row, the United Nations and the European Union are co-chairing a conference to urge further support to help the millions of Syrian people who remain vulnerable, refugees who have fled the fighting and the communities that are hosting them.

``Without an immediate and substantial injection of funds, life-saving provisions of food, water, health care, shelter and protective services, will likely be interrupted,’’ Mark Lowcock, the United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator, said.

Lowcock and Federica Mogherini, High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice-President of the Commission, will preside over a meeting of Foreign Ministers on March 14th that will once again affirm the international community’s support financial support for Syria’s neighbouring countries and serve as the main international event in 2019 to try to secure more funds for Syria and the region.

Mogherini spoke of the purpose of the Brussels III Conference when she addressed a session of the UN Security Council in New York earlier this week. She told the Council members that the Brussels Conference intended to ``mobilise international support to the UN-led political process; to gather pledges to guarantee humanitarian aid for Syrians inside and outside of their country; and to support the countries of the region, starting from Jordan, Lebanon and Turkey.’’

Since the war in Syria began nine years ago, 5.6 million Syrians have become refugees, and 6.2 million people have been displaced inside Syria. Nearly 12 million people need humanitarian aid and protection.

To alleviate their suffering, the United Nations is seeking US$3.3. billion for aid to those inside Syria and US$ 5.5. billion for a refugee and resilience plan for Syria’s neighbouring countries.

``It is essential that the international community stays the course in supporting the millions of Syrian refugees who live in neighbouring countries and still require protection and assistance,’’ said Filippo Grandi, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees.

Representatives of more than 85 countries and regional institutions will participate in the ministerial part of the Syria conference on the 14th of March. Hundreds of representatives of Syrian, regional and international non-governmental and civil societies have participated in two days of dialogue that have taken place in Brussels before the foreign ministers’ meeting.
