UNRIC at Partnership Forum on Agenda 2030: Goal 16 for Change

UNRIC Director and Italy Desk Officer at UNICRI Conference FAO Rome 14Dec16

UNRIC joined the United Nations Regional Crime and Justice Institute (UNICRI), the Italian Foreign Ministry and a wide range of partners to highlight the centrality of Goal 16: Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions, in achieving all of the Sustainable Development Goals.

The Partnership Forum, hosted at FAO headquarters on 14 December, showcased UNICRI’s cross-thematic and system-wide approach to the Goals as a model for the whole UN family.

Some 200 representatives of institutions, UN agencies, the diplomatic corps, academia, the private sector and NGOs took part in this first international partnership Forum for action on Goal 16 of the UN's 2030 Development Agenda.

UNRIC has been working with UN entities in Europe to help raise awareness of the Goals, especially with the public of the 22 countries it services, in order to strengthen the ability to achieve the objectives set out in the 2030 Agenda, and with a focus on the transformative nature of the agenda.

Ms. Cindy Smith, Director of UNICRI and host of the event, stressed that for societies to be peaceful and inclusive, justice and human rights must be included in all strategies for sustainable development.

Giving the goals a human face is essential to increase understanding of Agenda 2030, UNRIC Director Deborah Seward told the Conference, further telling participants that it was key to "capture and communicate stories and real people and how the goals are transforming their lives.’’ Cross promotion and cooperation will be essential elements of success in communication, Ms. Seward said.

Echoing the call for enhanced partnership coming from both the Italian government representative and the Head of the European Union Office in Italy, who emphasised that Europe will integrate the social, economic and environmental components of the SDGs in all of its policies, in an ambitious long-term effort to achieve the Goals.
