On 21 November 2016 United Nations Cinema proudly partnered with Aviva plc to raise awareness of the Sustainable Development Goals, through the screening of “Tomorrow” in Central London.
Through the film, directors Cyril Dion and Mélanie Laurent wanted to demonstrate that showing solutions and telling a feel-good story might be the best way to solve the ecological, economical and social crises that we are currently going through.
The projection of the film at Aviva’s London office was followed by a Q & A with representatives from, Aviva plc, Restless Development, Make Sense, the World Food Program and the United Nations Regional Information Centre in Brussels.
Aviva has been mobilising finance to support the Global Goals for Sustainable Development since the goals were implemented in 2015. As part of the discussion, Steve Waygood, Aviva, Chief Responsible Investment Officer, highlighted “how the way people’s pensions or shares are invested can have a transformative effect,” emphasing the important link between the world of finance and sustainable development. Raf Galdeano, Accountability Advocate for Youth Power Campaign from Restless Development stressed “education is a big part of changing the system, you need to understand it first. This film inspires you to work in small tiny ways and that’s how we make things happen.”
Sarah Borchers, Head of Private Sector Partnerships UK & Ireland for the World Food Programme added that “we must embrace everyone that wants to be part of the solution.” This is what organisations like Restless Development and Make Sense provide, platforms for anyone in the world to get involved at any level to solve social and environmental issues, with young people at the forefront of change and development.
Deborah Seward, Director of the United Nations Regional Information Centre in Brussels concluded the discussion stating that “organisations like the UN must listen to be part of the change,” in working towards achieving the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
