In a hard-hitting speech, the United Nations human rights chief strongly warns against the impact that populists and demagogues are having on society, and calls for more effort to safeguard human rights law. “Are we going to continue to stand by and watch this banalization of bigotry, until it reaches its logical conclusion?” Mr. Ra'ad Al Hussein asked. “Ultimately, it is the law that will safeguard our societies – human rights law, binding law which is the distillation of human experience, of generations of human suffering, the screams of the victims of past crimes and hate. We must guard this law passionately, and be guided by it.”

To welcome the start of the 2016 summer Paralympic Games, United Nations Secretary-General  Ban Ki-moon says that the Games not only showcase the extraordinary abilities of athletes living with a disability, they also promote the rights of all persons with disabilities. Sport has a particularly important role to play in promoting and implementing the Convention  on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and that the Paralympic Movement provides a catalyst for lasting change. The UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has highlighted that the Paralympic Games prove that an individual’s ability, and not their disability, defines what they can accomplish.

This award recognises the dedication and effort of an individual peacekeeper in promoting the principles within the United Nations Security Council Resolution 1325, and is specifically intended for a military peacekeeper who has had an exceptional role in integrating a gender perspective into peacekeeping activities. The award is intended to help raise the profile and understanding of what mainstreaming a gender perspective, within a military context, means for UN Peacekeeping missions.
