2 September 2016 – On Wednesday, Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon addressed the opening of the 21st Century Panglong Peace Conference in Nay Pyi Taw, Myanmar, stating, “The long civil war has cost numerous lives and robbed successive generations of their dignity, tranquility and normalcy. It is now clear that there can be no military solution to your differences.” The conference brings together representatives from the government, the military, civil society and ethnic armed organisations.

This week, 28 August-2 September, also marks World Water Week.

World Water Week in Stockholm is the annual focal point for the globe’s water issues. This year, the theme is Water for Sustainable Growth, which ties into goal 6 of the Sustainable Development Goals aiming to ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all, by 2030.

As of January 2016, 243,750 people had fled the violence in Central African Republic (CAR) and become refugees in Cameroon. UN Women Cameroon supports economic and social rehabilitation for vulnerable women and survivors of sexual and gender-based violence in seven refugee camps in three regions of the country.

This week, the United Nations Children’s Fund has highlighted that the opportunity cost from a lack of access to water disproportionately falls on women and girls who collectively spend as much as 200 million hours – or more than 22,800 years – every day collecting this vital resource.
