21.04.2016 - UN President of the General Assembly, H.E. Mogens Lykketoft will convene a High Level Thematic Debate on Achieving the Sustainable Development Goals on 21 April 2016 to ensure the prompt and inclusive implementation of the 2030 Agenda.
“This is our 15-year plan to end global poverty, fight inequality and build peaceful societies on a healthy planet.” – UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon remarks at Erasmus University Rotterdam, The Netherlands, 20 April 2016.
Extensive coordination and collaboration from civil society, government and the businesses community is required since the 2030 Agenda includes 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) with 169 targets.
The debate is timely and necessary given the broader framework of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and its strong linkages with the Paris Climate Agreement that will be signed in New York on April 22.
The meetings present an opportunity to build on the successful international agreements of 2015.
“I take heart in part from the two landmark achievements of 2015: the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Paris Agreement on climate change. These are two important vigils and commitments adapted and laid out by the world leaders. They have shown sense of purpose sense of unity despite all political and ideological, religious differences,” – Ban Ki-moon.
Leaders will be offered a platform to catalyse action, discuss concrete steps forward and mobilize potential implementation partners for achieving the SDGs.
The panel will be centered on 5 focus areas with a cross-cutting focus on gender equality and capacity building.
By signing the agreement in September 2015 Member States committed to drive national responses to implementation of the 2030 Agenda. All actors, led by national governments, will need to work to deliver sustainable development which leaves no-one behind.
2. Financing poverty eradication and sustainable development
Implementing the 2030 Agenda and fulfilling COP21 commitments, requires substantial financial resources as well as sound regulatory frameworks. Public and private finance as well as domestic and international finance must be urgently mobilized.
3. Technology and data for SDGs
The development and diffusion of new technologies and the collection of high quality, timely and reliable information and data are important means of implementing the SDGs. We need to improve access to technology, as well as capacity for technology development, and ensure that the best available information technology tools and information sources are used across sectors.
4. Partnerships for the implementation of the SDGs
This new Agenda will only be realized if the implementation process is partnership based, fully inclusive, transparent and accountable.
5. Climate Action in the Context of Sustainable Development
