12.02.2016 - This week's #PhotoFriday highlights some of the most important UN news stories emanating from across the world.

UNSG Syrian Conference

4th February saw the Support Syria Conference take place in London.  The UK, Germany, Kuwait, Norway, and the United Nations co-hosted the conference which raised over US$ 11 billion in pledges to help those affected in Syria.

On 5th February, United Nations Postal Administration (UNPA) unveiled a set of six commemorative stamps designed by Sergio Baradat, to promote the UN Free & Equal campaign for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex (LGBTI) equality.

6th February was International Day of Zero Tolerance for Female Genital Mutilation (FGM).  FGM affects 140 million women and girls worldwide. Many initiatives have been taken in order to eradicate this practice, including educating preschoolers in Africa about FGM.

Darfur is just one region where civilians face humanitarian crises brought about by conflict.  9th February saw the launch of the UNSG Ban Ki-moon’s report on the first World Humanitarian Summit which will take place 23 – 24 May in Istanbul, Turkey.  “We must ensure no-one in conflict, no-one in chronic poverty, and no-one living with the risk of natural hazards and rising sea levels is left behind.”

12th February marks International Day against the Use of Child Soldiers “The release of all children from armed groups must take place without delay. We cannot wait for peace to help children caught in the midst of war,” said UNICEF Deputy Executive Director Yoka Brandt.
