2015 announced as hottest year on record

The global average surface temperature in 2015 broke all previous records by a strikingly wide margin. For the first time on record, temperatures in 2015 were about 1°C above the pre-industrial era, according to a consolidated analysis from the World Meteorological Organization (WMO).

Adoption of Resolution 2261 (2016) Step towards Ending Region’s Longest Conflict

The Security Council decided to establish a political mission of unarmed international observers to monitor and verify for one year the laying down of arms by the Government of Colombia and the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia–People’s Army (FARC-EP), should they agree to end a civil war that has raged for half a century, the longest in Latin America.

International Day of Commemoration in Memory of Victims of the Holocaust

As a part of a week of commemorative events at Headquarters in New York, a ceremony was held Wednesday 27th in the General Assembly hall. Speakers included the Secretary General, Ban Ki-moon.  

“The international community is failing to hold perpetrators to account,” he warned. “Today, we see actions of Da’esh that may amount to grave crimes against minority groups such as the Yazidis. And the conflict in Syria has generated the worst humanitarian crisis of our time.”

African Union Summit

The Secretary General will be in Addis Ababa for the end of the African Union Summit 30-31 January.

In 1999, the Heads of State and Government of the Organisation of African Unity issued a Declaration calling for the establishment of an African Union, with a view to accelerate the process of integration in the continent. The Summit ran from January 21st with a theme of “2016, African year of Human Rights” with a focus on the Rights of Women.
