22.10.2015 - In 1975 the United Nations turned 30. This Saturday, nearly 40 years later, the Organization will turn 70.

"It’s hard to think of a world without the UN. I can’t, and I know I’m not alone.” -Steve Whitehouse

In 1975 the United Nations turned 30. To mark the Organization's 30th anniversary, staff member Steve Whitehouse was featured in a mini documentary, sharing his views about the UN and its role in a rapidly changing world.

At the time, the UN’s focus was on global economic interdependence, as ‘third world countries’ - now often called ‘developing countries’ - demanded to be increasingly involved in trade deals. It is striking how many of the issues still ring true today, as Whitehouse's words describe:

"The world is changing too fast for us to keep up with it. But for a lot of people the world is still the same.  A marginal life, where a change in weather can mean disaster.”

The UN’s 70th anniversary runs parallel to this year’s implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG’s), for all people in all countries, no one should be left behind. The SDG's build on the success of the Millennium Development Goals, which were adopted in 2000 and have lifted millions out of poverty.

  • Gender inequality still persists.

  • Big gaps exist between the poorest and richest households, and between rural and urban areas.

  • Climate change and environmental degradation undermine the progress achieved, and poor people suffer the most.

  • Millions of poor people still live in poverty and hunger, without access to basic services.

This is why the Sustainable Development 2030 Agenda is a plan of action for the people, planet and prosperity, which seeks to strengthen universal peace, for years to come.
