16 September 2014 - Former mayor of New York, Michael Bloomberg has been nominated a Commander of the Légion d´honneur. French Foreign Minister, Mr. Laurent Fabius presented the insignia of the order to Mr. Bloomberg at an award ceremony on 16 September in the Foreign Ministry in Paris.

Mr. Bloomberg was appointed earlier this year as the United Nations Secretary-General´s Special Envoy for Cities and Climate Change. Bloomberg, who served as the Mayor of New York City, from 2001-2014, is the founder and owner of Bloomberg L.P., the global financial data and media company.

In his capacity as UN Special Envoy on Cities and Climate Change, Mr. Bloomberg will meet French Mayors and CEOs at a dinner hosted by French Foreign Minister Mr. Fabius. He will also have a bi-lateral meeting with OECD Secretary-General Angel Gurría, followed by their joint appearance on Bloomberg TV. Mr. Bloomberg will also have a meeting with Ms. Anne Hidalgo, the Mayor of Paris. Le Figaro will publish a joint Op-ed signed by Mr. Bloomberg, and Ms. Hidalgo on the occasion of his visit. He will also give interviews to major media outlets such as Le Monde.

On January 31, 2014, United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon announced that he had appointed Mr. Bloomberg as his Special Envoy for Cities and Climate Change, in the run up to the Climate Summit 2014 this 23 September. Mr. Ban has invited world leaders, from government, finance, business, and civil society to galvanize and catalyze climate action in order to reduce emissions, strengthen climate resilience, and mobilize political will for a meaningful legal agreement in 2015. The 21st Conference of the Parties (COP 21) to take place in Paris in 2015 will be presided by Mr. Fabius and affirms France's commitment in the fight against climate change.
Mr. Bloomberg´s role is to assist the Secretary-General in consultations with mayors and related key stakeholders to raise political will and mobilize action among cities as part of a long-term strategy to advance efforts on climate change.

In announcing his appointment UN Secretary-General Mr. Ban Ki-moon noted that, in addition to his many philanthropic efforts, Mr. Bloomberg is also well known for his “strong stewardship” on environment and climate change.
“He has made this great city of New York a carbon-free city. It has been his hallmark, and as President of the C40 Mayors Group for Climate Change, he has been making a great contribution to a global effort, together with the United Nations, to make this Planet Earth and our world environmentally sustainable,” said the Secretary-General.
