World Peace to be celebrated at Wembley Arena

peaceoneday21 September is the International Peace Day. On this day, communities around the world gather to organize events in favour of global peace and against violence and war. London will host, among other, the last in a trilogy of Peace One Day concerts at the Wembley Arena. The concerts, streamed live on youtube, are part of the Global Truce campaign, which aims to be the largest ever gathering of individuals in the name of peace on one day. As with the previous Peace One Day concerts, Wembley will be host to a number of famous artists, including the likes of Sir Elton John, James Morrison and 2CELLOS. Peace One Day Ambassadors Jude Law and Lily Cole will be the concert hosts.

During its 10 year existence, Peace One Day events have made a difference in various regions of conflict, most notably in Afghanistan, where Peace Day agreements have led to the vaccination against polio of 4.5 million children in recent years. In 2008 the UN Department for Safety and Security announced a 70% reduction in violent incidents in Afghanistan on Peace Day.

Since its establishment by the UN in 1981, Peace Day has proved to be an opportunity for life-saving activities and action by individuals worldwide. Still, peace is a rarity, whereas war and violence are still daily practice in many regions around the world. According to Assistant Secretary-General for Peacebuilding Support, Judy Cheng-Hopkins, “more than 1.5 billion people live in countries ravaged by war, these countries unfortunately tend to relapse into violent conflict. Conflict and instability breathe poverty and human rights abuses against the most venerable, usually women and children”. Unfortunately, events like the Peace One Day concert are therefore still necessary.

The Peace One Day Celebration will be streamed LIVE only via Peace One Day’s YouTube channel from 7.30pm BST (1:30 EST / 8:30pm CET) on Peace Day — Friday 21 September 2012. Wherever you are in the world you can join Peace One Day in celebrating Peace Day and Global Truce 2012.
