UK & Ireland: International Development Summit in Cardiff – 17 September

WCIACardiff is hosting this year's International Development Summit, which takes place today, 17 September. The summit aims to foster international development networks across Wales.

After the summit is opened by Carwyn Jones, First Minister of Wales, Jane Davidson (former Labour Assembly Member for Pontypridd and the Minister for Environment, Sustainability and Housing in the Welsh Assembly Government) will host a bilingual panel discussion with representatives of Christian Aid, Oxfam and Assembly Member Lord Dafydd Elis-Thomas.

During the rest of the one-day summit, practitioners, volunteers, academics, diaspora communities and campaigners with an interest in international development can attend workshops on a range of critical issues such as:

  • Gender and Education;
  • Development and the Arts;
  • Engaging Diasporas in International Development Activity in Wales;
  • Voice, Inequality and Campaigning;
  • Health and Human Rights;
  • Resilience in the face of Climate Change;
  • Department for International Development (DFID) and Civil Society;
  • Wales in the World and the World in Wales.

Attendees can also meet with Assembly Members, International NGOs, DFID, the Wales for Africa team and community practitioners to discuss these issues.

The host organization of the International Development Summit is the recently established Wales International Development Hub, which is part of the Welsh Centre for International Affairs (WCIA). The Hub will provide a collective and collaborative space which can further meet and enhance Welsh civil society organisations' appetite for, and contribution to, international development. Working with partners across the Welsh sector, the Hub will bring together a coherent schedule of events, training and new collaborative opportunities.
