Citizen Ambassadors contest in observance of World Humanitarian Day

citizenWhat would you say if you were given 30 seconds to pitch an idea to the Secretary-General of the United Nations that could change the world? By sending in your video to the latest edition of the Citizen Ambassadors video contest you could be in with a chance of meeting the Secretary-General in person to make that pitch.

The United Nations Department of Public Information, in partnership with the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), will run the 3rd annual Citizen Ambassadors video contest from 8 August 2011, to 8 September 2011. The contest is run in observance of World Humanitarian Day 2011 (WHD2011), celebrated annually on 19 August.

World Humanitarian Day is a celebration of people helping people. Every day humanitarian aid workers help millions of people around the world. There is never a year without humanitarian crises. And wherever there are people in need, there are people who help them – men and women coming together to ease suffering and bring hope.

The day recognizes the sacrifices and contributions of humanitarian workers and is about inspiring the spirit of aid work in everyone. This year’s website is sharing a series of stories, highlighting the wide range of work humanitarians do and what motivates them. In this one, aid worker Marco Domino shares a special story from Haiti.

Humanitarian photographer Marco Domino talks about working closely with a family in Haiti.
